Stay in control
Gambling should be fun. For most people it is — but for some it stops being a bit of entertainment and starts causing harm. This page explains how to keep gambling safe, how to spot the warning signs, and exactly where to get free, confidential help if you need it. Whatever brought you here, you're welcome — and you're not alone.
An honest moment
Know the warning signs
Problem gambling rarely arrives overnight — it creeps in. Tick any of the statements below that sound familiar. There are no right answers; this is just a gentle, private way to be honest with yourself.
- I've gambled more money than I planned to, or more often than I meant to.
- I've tried to win back money I lost by gambling again ("chasing").
- I've borrowed money, sold things or gone without to fund gambling.
- Gambling is affecting my mood, sleep, work or relationships.
- I've lied to family or friends about how much I gamble.
- I feel restless or irritable when I try to cut down or stop.
- I gamble to escape stress, low mood or boredom.
- I've thought "I really should stop" — but carried on anyway.
⚠️ Ticked one or more?
Even a single statement is worth taking seriously. It doesn't mean you have a gambling problem — but it's a signal to set tighter limits, take a break, and talk to someone. The free National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is a good first call.

Looking out for others
Worried about someone else?
Gambling harm doesn't only affect the person betting — it touches partners, families and friends too. If you're worried about someone, you don't have to fix it alone.
- Choose a calm moment to talk, without blame — focus on how you feel, not on accusations.
- Encourage them to call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, or to use GAMSTOP.
- Look after your own wellbeing too — GamCare and Gam-Anon support friends and family.
💡 Protecting under-18s
Gambling is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. If you share devices with young people, consider parental controls and blocking software, and keep account logins private. BeGambleAware has guidance for parents.
